The first novel in the beloved Tales of the City series, Armistead Maupin’s best-selling San Francisco saga, soon to return to television as a Netflix original series once again starring Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis.
For almost four decades Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City has blazed its own trail through popular culture—from a groundbreaking newspaper serial to a classic novel, to a television event that entranced millions around the world. The first of nine novels about the denizens of the mythic apartment house at 28 Barbary Lane, Tales is both a sparkling comedy of manners and an indelible portrait of an era that changed forever the way we live.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Published in 1978, Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is a wonderfully evocative sketch of San Francisco at the dawn of the gay-rights era, before the AIDS crisis and the tech boom changed the city forever. Free love is still in the air as plucky Mary Ann Singleton moves into bohemian grande dame Anna Madrigal’s rooming house at 28 Barbary Lane. The residents of the sprawling home are an endearingly quirky group of friends, lovers, and rivals. Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand’s charming characterizations and playful narration make this charismatic novel even more charming. It’s like she’s our new best friend, dishing gossip and celebrating life’s magical moments.

Much much better than the mini series. Narration is awesome. Totally addictive.
