“There Was Always An Us”
Ellie Fournier and Gianni Lupo have been frenemies most of their lives. Their families were frequently together as their mothers were, are best friends. Their moms even hoped that one day, Gianni and Ellie would marry…When Ellie’s parents decide to spend an extended time in France, they ask Gianni to be head chef at their new restaurant—Etoile. Ellie is the expert sommelier of Abelard Vineyards. So Ellie is in charge of pairing wines to Gianni’s meals. Of course, Ellie is furious because she “hates” Gianni and she will now have to work with him on a daily basis. But for her parents, she’d try her hardest to make it work.
Gianni, already a famous chef at twenty-three, believes in working and playing hard. He’s a player and does not EVER see himself as settling down or having kids. While he values his family and is devoted to them, he just doesn’t see himself as a family man. One of Gianni’s greatest pleasures is harassing Ellie. Even though he enjoys aggravating her, he respects her drive and ambition. So he offers, insists on being her assistant at a wine tasting as she’s hoping to earn a spot on the hostess’s 30 by 30 list. But things don’t go as planned…

Ellie and Gianni’s story is one of the best I’ve read in awhile! Their bickering, explosive chemistry, and drive to succeed kept me engaged well into the night. While Gianni was cocky, confident, and extremely good looking, he was also insecure in his feelings. His insecurities led to fibs, then mistrust. Ellie was one of the most high-strung, type A heroines I’ve read in awhile. I like that their “accident” had her re-evaluating certain aspects of her life and her need to be perfect. Gianni’s “Go Big” idea at the end was PERFECT! The only thing that would’ve been the icing on the cake, would’ve been the umbrella. High praises to Melanie Harlow for gifting us with such an amazing story. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own. I did not listen to the audiobook.
