Publisher Description
Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, The Age of Innocence is Edith Wharton’s masterful portrait of desire and betrayal which takes place in the sumptuous Golden Age of Old New York, and questions the morals and assumptions of the elite New York society set in the 1870s when "scandal was more dreaded than disease."
This is Newland Archer’s world as he prepares to marry the beautiful but conventional May Welland. But when the mysterious Countess Ellen Olenska returns to New York after a disastrous marriage, Archer falls deeply in love with her. Torn between duty and passion, Archer struggles to make a decision that will either courageously define his life—or mercilessly destroy it.
Performed by Academy Award winning actress Joanne Woodward who also provided the narration for the 1993 film version of The Age of Innocence.
Customer Reviews
NOT narrated by Edith Wharton...OBVIOUSLY...
Hey, I-tunes - since Wharton died in 1937, I'm fairly certain she didn't narrate ANY books for download.... and certainly not this one, which is narrated, however, by Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward, in a lovely, warm and modulated voice. The only thing stopping me from buying this is that it's abridged, and I don't want to miss a word.

This book is in the public domain. You can get the audiobook on LibraVox for free. Why is this version so blasted expensive? I can understand that certain people put money and effort into this release but I'm sure this price is massively inflated.
