Publisher Description
When first published in 1899, The Awakening shocked readers with its honest treatment of female marital infidelity. Audiences accustomed to the pieties of late Victorian romantic fiction were taken aback by Chopin's daring portrayal of a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, who seeks and finds passionate physical love outside the confines of her domestic situation.
Customer Reviews
A bit stale
A poor little rich girl story. A woman married to a doting husband feels suffocated and anguish because of her desire for another man. Maybe for its time it was refreshing or even shocking. But plot is meager, and there is little character development. Kudos to the narrator, who is quite good.
Classic well-presented
Gentle, early exploration of the ennui and naive yearnings of an upper class young married woman who is hidebound by marriage and social expectations.
