She's looking for the perfect man. He's looking for the perfect victim.
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She's seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.
Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.
Then the brutal murder of a young woman―the latest in a string of deaths across the coast―confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.
Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can't shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn't get to the truth, she'll be the killer's next victim…
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Dating apps, a dreamy doctor, and gory murders collide in this wild ride of a thriller. Unhappily single, 34-year-old New Yorker Sydney Shaw is looking for love and thinks she’s finally found it with a dashing doctor named Tom, who comes to her rescue after a particularly bad date. Everything seems perfect until Sydney’s neighbor is murdered and the case goes to her homicide detective ex-boyfriend, Jake Sousa. Jake thinks the case is connected to a number of other killings across the city…and they’re all linked to Sydney’s favorite dating app. McFadden is the queen of pacey, tantalizing thrillers. The story is told in dual timelines with alternating points of view, and narrators Victoria Connolly—Sydney in the present—and Adam Blanford—Tom in the past—keep the tension building until it’s almost unbearable. And trust us, you won’t guess the shocking twist. Gripping, enthralling, and totally consuming, The Boyfriend will make you think twice before swiping right.

Starts painfully slow but gets better
Painfully slow start, and let’s be honest, I had to listen to the whole thing on some version of speed read. The main character is spineless and clueless, so much so that she is difficult to like. Is anybody actually that desperate for a man?! The ending was good. Nobody can guess it, because there are zero parallels drawn between the two characters. And what’s with the old-fashioned names? I’m sorry, but nobody has any of these names, particularly Gretchen?! Seriously?! It is well done overall though and I would recommend.
Whiny and antiquated relationship outlooks
If I had to hear ONE MORE TIME how having a man around, being in a relationship, or being able to secure a boyfriend could validate or change this woman’s existence, I’d scream.
Oh. My. Tom.
Couldn’t stop listening, and what a twist!!!
