Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere—and risk it all—in the name of love.

Wondrous book, but the narrator is tragically out of his element

The story is indeed wondrous. As a New Yorker with caribbean parents and sci-fi interests, I love the subject matter and the author's writing style. If you are a "Lord of the Rings" fan you will find yourself laughing out loud many times, but the narrator is out of his element. In the first part of the book he seems uncomfortable. He gets better but, he is not convincing as someone who knows the life of Oscar Wao.

Best Book Ever

This book was the first book I have ever completely finished reading and I am glad it was this book. This book is amazing in every sense of the word: funny, tragic, shocking, breathtaking. I never felt so into a book like I did with this book. As I read it, I felt like Diaz was speaking to me rather than writing a book for me to read because he wrote as if he were having a normal conversation. I recommend this book 100% to everyone.
