Publisher Description
Following the events of Bloodless, the "exciting" and "nail-biting" new thriller in Preston & Child's #1 bestselling series will once again feature FBI Special Agent A. X. L. Pendergast and Constance Greene.
Against all odds, Constance has found a way back to the place of her origins, New York City in the late 1800s, and sets off on a quest to prevent the events that lead to the deaths of her sister and brother, and stop Manhattan’s most infamous serial killer, Dr. Enoch Leng of the seminal Pendergast novel The Cabinet of Curiosities, before his nefarious experiments come to fruition.
Meanwhile, in present-day New York, Pendergast is desperate to find a way to reunite with Constance—but will he find a way before it’s too late?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
There’s gruesome murder, macabre violence, and even time travel in this supernatural-tinged thriller. The elegant and eerie FBI Special Agent Pendergast is on a mission to save his love, Constance Greene. She has traveled back in time to rescue her siblings from the killer Dr. Leng, who harvests spinal fluid from his orphan victims to extend his life—and by doing so, Constance puts herself in his crosshairs. We absolutely loved the way Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child filled this listen with impeccably researched details about everything from architecture to mechanical engineering (not to mention some cleverly invented specifics about how time machines work). Narrator Jefferson Mays’ measured performance perfectly conveys the novel’s rich depictions of 1880s New York. If you aren’t already a fan of the long-running Pendergast series, this visit to the grimy streets of the Gilded Age will make you one.
Customer Reviews
Very good. Not great
As per both of their books, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, and the narrator was as usual exceptional. I too, was disheartened at the ending or lack there of. But I enjoyed their explanation and look forward to the conclusion of this series in the next novel
Rotten Ending
Reader left hanging at the end in obvious ploy to sell next edition. Very disappointing from talented writers.
The Cabinet of Dr. Leng
Well worth the wait. Jefferson Mays did a superb job as the voice actor but more importantly the authors delivered a fantastic addition to the Pendergast story line. It kept me thoroughly engaged with its multiple threads from start to finish.
