Publisher Description
Considered by many to be the first autobiography/memoir ever written,
Confessions is a retrospective view of a life challenged by uncertainty, doubt, human frailty, and earthly desires. Augustine discovers and cherishes a deeply personal relationship with his God, all while describing the day-to-day dealings of his life in the fading, corrupt days of the Roman Empire.
Translated in 1997 by Maria Boulding, this version of The Confessions contains clear, modern language.

Great Translation!
This great translation by Sr. Maria Boulding is for anyone whose tried to read previous translations of THE CONFESSIONS and gotten overwhelmed. It was only after listening to this audio translation that I was able to go back and read both Frank Sheed and Henry Chadwick's 2 versions. It is narrated by Adam Dudley who has a good strong voice that's pleasant to listen to for long periods of time. Well worth the buy; fits incely on 6 CD's.
Good Translation, difficult narration
Overall, I am mostly pleased with this purchase. The translation is good, but I have to register a dissenting opinion on the narration. The narrator has a sonorous, deep voice which is pleasant; but he breaks sentences into phrases that follow a detectable and predictable pattern throughout. I realize that a rushed reading would make it difficult to meditate on the deep meaning within the text, but a somewhat more conversational reading would have helped me make it through longer stretches of the narration. Listen CAREFULLY to the preview. It contains the full gamut of emotion, pacing, and pronunciation found within the book. Given that you WILL be listening closely to the words of St. Augustine throughout, the quality of narration will bear a greater than normal importance in your enjoyment.
Great narrator!
Adam Dudley gives this excellent translation an amazing gravitas and elocution; he should do more works like this. Definitely the best version out there!
