Written like fan fiction of a real series
I have a lot of issues with this series so far as a whole. There are plot inconsistencies within the books as well as inconsistencies between this series and the Shadowdance series, things happen conveniently with no real explanation, characters behave outside their norm just to move plot, etc.
However, as I am not reviewing the series right now, I will focus on this book in particular. There are a lot of problems in the writing, but let’s focus on the four main issues I with it.

1. Priests of Ashar hide in the back of the temple rather than defend this incredibly important dark book that must not fall into the wrong hands. We know the priests have divine powers and specialize against darkness and the undead.
2. Qurrah’s whole driving motivation at this point has been to cure Tessanna’s madness. That is thrown away and replaced with BURN THE WORLD with no other explanation than she doesn’t want to be cured, and if they help destroy the world they will be taken somewhere peaceful. They could’ve just not and found a nice place on their own world. Tessanna even expressed revulsion at how “ugly” the world would be and how she didn’t like that.
3. Delysia is turned into a shadow demon and then carried away to be killed by Qurrah for literally no reason or plot purpose. If the reason for her death was to provide character development and a point of stress for the protagonists, it is redundant since this was already achieved by her being turned into/possessed by a demon, and her death is just gratuitous and the author’s attempt to “stun readers”. She and Haern have a whole romantic arc in Shadowdance and killing her off so needlessly in the third book of Half Orcs without even mentioning it is just insulting to the character.
4. There is no way that an army more than 20,000 strong managed to march all the way into the heart of the kingdom of Neldar within hours of Veldaren without ANYONE noticing them. There are villages and castles along the way, somebody is seeing these monsters coming, even if they’re attacked and pillaged, somebody is sending a rider or lighting beacon fires. This is done simply to make the battle seem desperate, but if you can’t explain why they got there without being seen, don’t include that in the book. You could’ve easily given Neldar advanced warning, allowed them to begin gathering their soldiers and had the enemy attack before they could fully assemble, or have the enemy’s numbers be too great even with all of Neldar’s forces gathered to defend, instead of this insanity of no one seeing the largest army of monsters marching for weeks from the vile wedge all the way to Veldaren.
5. A group of lions is known as a pride, not a pack. Canines are pack, felines are pride. I know I said I had 4 issues, but I had to slip this in.
