The Defenders is a science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. Eight years in the past, a nuclear war erupted between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. American survivors evacuated to massive shelters located miles underground. High-tech robots called "Leadys" keep on fighting the war on the ravaged surface, it being too hazardous for humans.
