He’s the father of my child and my best friend.
When Hudson and I met, somehow things just clicked between us. We had the same sense of humor and the same carefree attitude about our lives and goals. Neither of us wanted to lay down roots, we wanted to explore the world.
Then one night, too much alcohol and uncontrolled hormones led to the line blurring, and we fell into bed together only to discover a month later that we were more careless than we thought.
Like the upstanding guy he is, Hudson followed me back to my hometown of Lake Starlight, Alaska, where you can’t throw a penny and not hit one of my family members. We gave them the news that yes, we were having a baby but there would be no wedding. We loved each other but we weren’t in love.
Fast forward three years and we live side by side to make co-parenting our daughter easy. I’m a writer, and he’s a ski instructor. We’ve worked out all the rough edges. Life is good.
Until out of nowhere, things start to change. He has a girlfriend, we’re arguing more than ever, and it feels as if someone has come along and popped our perfect bubble. I’m not sure we’re ever going to fit back inside it now because things are developing. Things like feelings.

Epic narrating
Kitt Swann and Jason Clarke
Jason Clarke is always a yes for me and he did a fantastic job as usually. Kitt Seann delivered an awesome job for the character she was portrayed especially when it came to the emotional parts.
Good story, great audio
3.5 stars
The Drawback of Single Dads is the fourth book in the Lake Starlight series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Hudson and Palmer were best friends who had a baby together. They remained friends and co-parented their daughter, Adley, together.
Hudson had a girlfriend, and while she wasn’t the kindest person, she wasn’t awful either. I don’t mind OW drama, but my main issue was with Hudson. He clearly wasn’t as invested in his relationship with her, but he unnecessarily dragged her along and tried to ignore his feelings for Palmer.
Palmer was great. She did her best to not cause any problems for Hudson’s relationship. And she was deaf, but she never once let her “disability” get her down.
Honestly, I didn’t really see the chemistry between Palmer and Hudson. Yes, they were great friends, but it took almost the entire story for them to realize their feelings, and suddenly they were in love.
Anyway, this was a little angsty, but it was still a cute story.
Audio:
Narrators: Jason Clarke and Kit Swann
Style: Duet
The audio was fantastic! Jason Clarke never disappoints. He always nails his character. Kit Swann was the real winner here though. Her “kid” voice was great. But her portrayal of Palmer was amazing — knowing Palmer was deaf, she used a different inflection when Palmer was speaking out loud.
Lake Starlight…aka…coming home
Palmer has always been a bit special. She’s the Bailey grandkid who has had to overcome a personal hurdle—being hearing impaired & has handled it with grace & poise. It helps that many around her have learned sign language, but even then, life can be difficult outside of the Bailey bubble or even outside of Lake Starlight. And even though she’s lived a good life while growing up, she knows there’s so much more out there & more world to explore.
Hudson has never wanted to settle down. He’s a thrill seeking, snowboarding, adventure junkie & he has no plans to slow down any time soon. But one night seeing a beautiful girl at the bar he’s tending & he’s completely smitten. Circumstances force him firmly in the friend zone, but he’s ok with that, because they just share something special.
But one drunken night, the lines are crossed, and these two find themselves with a sweet little bundle of joy 9 months later.
Three years later & they have co-parenting down to an art form. Now neighbors in Lake Starlight, they are readily available to assist each other at the drop of a hat. But even with friendship being their deepest connection, their chemistry is off the charts . That’s all fine and good until they each have to deal with the other one dating.
I loved watching these two slowly discover the depth of their relationship. The way that Hudson was a total caretaker for not just Adley (their daughter) but also Palmer. It was the little things he did so subtly that had the biggest impact in skyrocketing his swoon factor.
This best friends to lovers, single parents, small town, & maybe a bit of unrequited love read completely swept me off my feet. I loved the trip back to Lake Starlight as usual, & I was absolutely cracking up at the Northern Lights residents as they stirred up trouble.
I loved the touch of Harper & her relationship with Palmer…now I can’t wait for her shenanigans.
Audiobook Review:
Jason Clarke & Kit Swann absolutely owned these two characters. Jason’s portrayal of Hudson was so filled with passion and love. Kit’s ability to capture Palmer’s entire being was just perfect. For a character who didn’t verbally speak often, I felt she portrayed that part very well.
