I must be really dumb.

First of all if you loved the first book in the series. Skip this review.
America was constantly an emotional wreck.
She either wanted Maxon or Aspen. And she tugged them both along. And actually not just them but on America’s decision affected the other girls as well. To be honest I don’t know why I decided to get the 2nd book.
She would get jealous of Maxon being with the other candidates or Aspen talking to Celeste or whoever. Constantly asking for time which yes take your time when deciding to get married that’s a serious decision that changes your life. And in this case the outcome of a decision will change a lot of things. You’ll either be a princess or marry down your caste.
“How could she risk everything for this”
Can we just remember that you could easily be in that position? The girls were told from the beginning that they couldn’t fall in love with anyone other than the prince during the selection. It’s the price DURING the selection afterwards by all means fall in love and get married. Marlee sadly was caught. She almost made it out. America constantly allowing Aspen to be around and getting into intimates moments with him DID YOU NOT LEARN ANYTHING? Maxon made the choice of punishing them rather then allowing them to be killed. He spared them which I’m sure was a decision he made because of America, since Marlee was America’s best friend. Seeing how understanding he was with America’s situation that she loved someone back home and was willing to send her back, I fully believe that had Marlee been truthful with him, Maxon maybe would have found a way to help her.
Ended up DNF-ing the book. I could not continue it was just spiraling out of control for me.

Takes a while to get used to the voice

At first, I thought the reader’s voice was strangely robotic, but after a few chapters, I enjoyed how unbiased she sounds. I’m also amazed at how well she reads dialogue. As if it was how the characters sound in the protagonist’s mind.

I have read this book before so I can listen to this while I drive/work. Her unbiased voice helps me imagine all the scenes without anyone else’s interpretation.

Overall, fun book and easy listening ☺️
