Fairy tales come to life in this endearing first entry in Michael Buckley’s middle-grade fantasy series. Since the disappearance of their parents, 11-year-old Sabrina Grimm and her 7-year-old sister, Daphne, have lived in a nasty orphanage and multiple unpleasant foster homes. As a result, Sabrina doesn’t trust too many people. She certainly doesn’t believe that Mrs. Relda Grimm is the grandmother she’s never met. She definitely doesn’t believe that Sabrina and Daphne are descendants of the fairy-tale chroniclers the Brothers Grimm, or that their new home of Ferryport Landing, New York, is full of characters from those same fairy tales. Then a giant kidnaps Relda Grimm, and Sabrina has no choice but to believe. But what can she do about it? We loved this exciting story of two brave and loving sisters, which mixes magic and Scooby Doo–like detective work. (There’s even a Great Dane in the story, but his name is Elvis.) And narrator L.J.
