In the series’ first installment, Serkis displays a gift for inhabiting all of Tolkien’s characters, from the august wizard Gandalf to the plucky hobbit Frodo to the rest of the gang that joins their quest to save Middle-earth from an unfathomable evil. Even when he’s simply narrating Frodo and company’s quest in the third person, Serkis uses a rich, dramatic tone that makes every detail of the saga resonate. This audiobook is an awesome to experience a great epic.

Angry Gandalf!
Why does Andy have to make Gandalf so angry?! Love everything else about this audiobook and series in general though!
Andy Serkis is a fantastic narrator!
Many people have recorded the reading of these iconic Lord Of The Rings books, and it’s my opinion that Andy Serkis has done the best reading so far. He has a rich baritone voice with a wonderful command of the different characters.
I only have one small negative criticism. I like to fall asleep listening to audiobooks and Andy”s reading of Fellowship is lovely… until the crew of Hobbits make their way to a town called Bree. The Black Riders find them there and at one point in chapter fifteen all of a sudden the volume doubles with one of Brees inhabitants screaming “fire”!!! Which totally freaks me out of sleep while reaching for the volume button of Apple’s Books App. Not joking.
This is where I constructively ask for the folks who edited this story’s recording to find this one part and to TURN IT DOWN!
