Very good storyline! Lots of twists n turns. I love how it gives perspective from different characters and the narration is perfect!
Audiobook is annoying
Couldn’t even get half way through it, trying to understand why so many people liked it.
Overall amazing, but some annoying details
Spoiler-free:
Loved the book. The pacing was perfect. I was engaged from the beginning until the end. Loved the organization of the book, alternating between 2-4 different story lines.
As a Chicagoan, it seemed pretty obvious that the author has not spent much time in my city. Nobody says the cardinal direction when it’s obvious where you’re talking about…e.g. nobody says “West Belmont” because when you get that far north, there is no “East” anything…there is only “West Belmont”, so people would just say “Belmont”. Also they make references to addresses that don’t exist. There is no “316 W Belmont”. The lowest Belmont addresses start at 400. And the buildings at that part of the city are residential with maybe some ground floor storefronts, but there would not be offices higher than the 2nd floor in high rises like the author describes. Also he describes something as being “East of Lake Shore Drive”…east of lake shore, you’d be in the lakefront park or in Lake Michigan. There is no “east of lake shore drive.” That one was a huge mistake in my opinion. If you’re not familiar with Chicago, this probably won’t bother you, but do not expect an accurate depiction of the city.
**minor Spoilers section**:
The “clues” that they follow are all intentionally placed by the criminal mastermind antagonist…so I was a little sad that we didn’t get any “real” detective work. It was just like a treasure hunt if that makes sense. E.g. the pocket watch was stopped at “3:14”, so that clearly meant that the killer was hiding out at 314 W Belmont??? That was a stretch to me. We didn’t get any information from like a psychological profile of the killer or any unintentional evidence left behind. So that was a bummer. But it was forgivable because the story was thrilling and engaging, and I was along for the ride. Overall, I enjoyed the book a lot. I just wish there was some opportunity to piece real clues together on my own to get some satisfactory feeling like I figured something out. Instead we were just on a wild goose chase following manufactured, arbitrary evidence that had only superficial meaning. Any “predictions” I accurately called were just from blatant foreshadowing.
I’d still recommend the book to a friend though
