Margaret Atwood's popular dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale explores a broad range of issues relating to power, gender, and religious politics. Multiple Golden Globe award-winner Claire Danes (Romeo and Juliet, The Hours) gives a stirring performance of this classic in speculative fiction, one of the most powerful and widely read novels of our time.
After a staged terrorist attack kills the President and most of Congress, the government is deposed and taken over by the oppressive and all-controlling Republic of Gilead. Offred, now a Handmaid serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules in hopes of ending this oppression.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Whether you’re obsessed with the hit TV series or tapping into Margaret Atwood’s unsettling dystopia for the first time, this award-winning audiobook is a vital listen. Actress Claire Danes’ matter-of-fact reading lends an extra sense of realism to Atwood’s chilling classic about a terrifying, plausible future in which American religious extremists rule a totalitarian government that relegates women to serving powerful men. The simple fact that Danes’ voice is so familiar made this provocative and incendiary story that much more affecting.

If you're into terrible, this story is for you
In the first three hours of this audiobook (out of 11 total) there is exactly one scene that generates interest. It passes in under 5 minutes and you're back to the same horrible style of describe, describe, narrate, reflect, describe her reflections, reflect on her descriptions, describe her narrative reflections!!! Someone shoot me it's so bad! I can't take it anymore! I have to shut it off.
There is NOTHING going on. Zero action. The main character wants nothing, is trying to accomplish nothing. There is zero story. Ok, I get it. Life used to be pretty good and now it's terrible. But is anything going to HAPPEN? Is there going to be ANYTHING interesting? Answer is no. If you're into terrible stories, places, times, characters then this is going to be just your thing. Because it's nothing if not terrible. Don't blame Claire, story's got nothing to work with.
Excellent!!
The book is well written and intriguing. Claire Danes does an awesome job narrating. I didn't want it too end!
