Mature Graham Greene - more thoughtful and less violent
Graham Greene has seeded a minor backroom office of the British secret service with the just the right mixture of nice, well-meaning innocents to subvert the best-laid plans of the policy wallahs.
Much of the book consists of dialog between middle-aged public school bureaucrats. The narrator is extremely helpful in giving distinctive voices to differentiate the characters. He also easily manages Afrikaners, Russians, Poles and a very convincing black South African woman.
Greene and Tim Pigott-Smith is one of the few combinations for which I would pay full price
