Publisher Description
John Hooper's marvellously entertaining and perceptive new book is ideal for anyone seeking to understand contemporary Italy and the unique character of the Italians. Looking at the facts that lie behind - and often belie - the stereotypes, his revealing book sheds new light on many aspects of Italian life: football and Freemasonry, sex, symbolism and the reason why Italian has twelve words for a coat hanger, yet none for a hangover.

I had hoped the book
I had hoped the book would provide insight into my national and cultural heritage. However, John Hooper’s work quickly diverges from a balanced exploration into a scathing critique of Italian life. The author’s analysis lacks nuance, failing to adequately recognize the complex geographic and philosophical diversity within Italian society. His approach seems more like a systematic denunciation of Italian characteristics than a thoughtful examination. Most troublingly, Hooper’s narrative seems almost insensitive to the historical context of a people who have endured centuries of brutal invasions. His words feel like an additional layer of metaphorical destruction, compounding the historical challenges Italy has faced. While no culture is without flaws, Hooper’s text seems more interested in highlighting weaknesses than celebrating the nation’s remarkable qualities. This book offers little more than a cynical perspective. A more enriching approach would be to visit Italy personally or seek out more balanced, empathetic accounts that honor the complexity of Italian life and heritage.
