Fantasy fans will love this Egyptian-inflected chronicle of a secret royal who yearns to be free from the legacy of her past. Ever since massacre and invasion devastated the kingdom of Jasad, the heir to the throne, Essiya, has been in hiding. But her masquerade as Sylvia, the village pharmacist’s apprentice, is disrupted when a nobleman’s cruelly petulant injury to a little girl causes Essiya to reveal her true nature to Arin, the dangerously competent next-in-line to the man who conquered her kingdom. Pressured into serving in a ritual competition in order to bait two groups of Jasadi rebels into the open, Essiya discovers upsetting truths about her past and herself—including her growing attraction to Arin, who should be her greatest enemy. Just kept getting better
Audiobook started slow but then captured me. I am looking forward to the next audiobook
that learn what happens next!
Nails, chalkboards and narrators
This is an example of an audiobook brought to its knees by the narrator.
I gave it a few hours but ultimately could not get past the overacted and forceful nature of the reading. Every sentence seemed to hiss and spit in sing song cadences.
Over time, it builds up to the point you can no longer pay attention to the authors creation and the story. Your ears and mind spend more time wincing and trying to filter the continual exasperations and sibilant plosive overdrive.
Just read the book and don’t try to add emotive wordplay.
