A Stunning Novel of Hope and Redemption

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara -- a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of fathers over sons -- their love, their sacrifices, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation, Khaled Hosseini offers hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows us for redemption.

Beautiful story and beautifully written!

Gotta be honest….was about to drop this one like a bad habit after about 2-3 hours of listening.

Turned out to be one of my favorite audiobooks/books of all-time. Wonderful story!

One of my favorite books in my life

I just finished listening to the author read his story. The emotional journey will stay with me for the a very long time. My 18 year old son encouraged me to read this after he had finished it a third time. Sharing this story with him made it all that much more special. If you have not read this book implore you to do so now. Be ready to be challenged to look at your own life while listening to that of another man.

Pleasant Surprise

I honestly expected a real dud. It wasn’t. My son is going to have to read it for school so I wanted to jump ahead of him to be able to discuss it as the teacher was pushing the toxic masculinity theme with this book so I was wary of it. It’s not there unless you insinuate that Islam is a toxic culture. The issue of masculinity is there in a culture that is rougher than what we now have here. Afghanistan is a rough place and to survive you must have some toughness to you or you may not survive. It doesn’t mean you can’t have feelings though. I’m avoiding spoilers. The concept of real evil is on display in one of the characters which I think most people can’t grasp these days. I’m trying not to give away any of the story but I will say that the main character Amir, is a very relatable person anywhere and one you will want to see succeed. This is just a plain good book and worthy of the praise it receives. A very pleasant surprise!
