From ape to man, and God.
This was a very interesting and exciting audiobook, with high sea adventures, and multiple near death experiences; and though some reviews that I read after listening to the audiobook spoke of racism, that was not what really got my attention. What got my attention was that the main character prayed to God at some point, and felt better, also there were statements that would make one believe that the author believed that there was actually a God in heaven; and then, BOOM! there he was, describing Big Bang theory scenes, as if Christianity and The Big Bang could coexist.
I believe that somewhere in the world man used to live in caves, I also believe that there was a Stone Age, but by no means do I believe that man came from apes, nor do I believe that these pre historic, cave dwelling, graffiti artists couldn’t speak at one point, as Adam and Eve reportedly spoke in the third chapter of Genesis.
The girl, (as she’s often indicated to,) had a good point when she said that there is no point in anything, indeed this statement is true for the atheist; there is no point in anything, however big or small it is; after you die you are forgotten, and you leave your possessions to another, you’re riches can neither help you nor can you keep any of them. Though you labored tirelessly all your days, and though great are your possessions, you must come away empty handed, and in time your memory is forgotten. Indeed, all by which you are remembered is the short obituary in the newspaper the following day.
Yet we, who believe in God, have a hope, and a future beyond this life; we have an eternal inheritance, a crown that will never fade, riches imperishable, and a portion in the Tree of Life. Also shall we sit at table with the Lamb of God, our Lord, who we have served to the end; we shall see the disciples and prophets, the elect, and the face of God himself; and we shall jump into his arms, and be held by him, as we’ll hear him say “well done my child, well done.” Then we shall know that our labor was not in vain.
Fun and intriguing read
The story’s concept—an isolated land untouched by modern time—is engaging and keeps the plot moving at a steady pace. Burroughs’ writing is simple but vivid, making it easy to picture the strange environment and the dangers the characters face. While the characters are not deeply developed, the excitement of exploration and survival makes the book enjoyable.
