Publisher Description
The first installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit Netflix series.
In the middle years of the ninth century, the fierce Danes stormed onto British soil, hungry for spoils and conquest. Kingdom after kingdom fell to the ruthless invaders until but one realm remained. And suddenly the fate of all England—and the course of history—depended upon one man, one king.
From New York Times bestselling storyteller Bernard Cornwell comes a rousing epic adventure of courage, treachery, duty, devotion, majesty, love, and battle as seen through the eyes of a young warrior who straddled two worlds.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The eccentric ambitions of a mad king could have repercussions centuries later in this exciting thriller. In 17th-century Bavaria, King Ludwig II obsessively searches for a new land to rule shortly before he dies under suspicious circumstances. In the present day, several shadowy groups are hunting for documents that could prove Ludwig found his new kingdom, hoping to claim it and change the balance of global power. So retired covert operative Cotton Malone is brought in to find Ludwig’s lost papers—before the bad guys do. Steve Berry cleverly loads this installment in his long-running Cotton Malone series with little-known incidents from real-world history, along with a fantastic barrage of entertaining plot twists. And Scott Brick’s full-bodied narration heightens the heady drama and suspense. The Last Kingdom proves history isn’t just fun—it’s downright thrilling.

What a worthwhile purchase and time spent! I listened to this after being blown away by the Netflix series. The narrator brings Uhtred’s quest to life. ❤️
A Fantastic Story
I’ve always like Bernard Cornwell’s books, and have listened to a few of the corresponding audiobooks. An audiobook, no matter how good the text version, can be practically destroyed by a bad narrator, or elevated by a good one. In my opinion, Jonathan Keeble is one of the best and he made The Last Kingdom an absolute joy to listen to. Kudos to him, and my heartiest recommendation for this book!
Best story out there
