Publisher Description

A librarian with a mysterious past, a war hero with a secret, and the heist of a magic painting. THE LIBRARIAN OF CROOKED LANE is an intriguing new fantasy from C.J. Archer, the USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.

Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she’s descended from magicians, she’s skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she’s just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won’t be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

War hero Gabe is gifted with wealth, a loving family, and an incredible amount of luck that saw him survive four harrowing years of a brutal war without injury. But not all injuries are visible. Burying himself in his work as a consultant for Scotland Yard, Gabe is going through the motions as he investigates the theft of a magician-made painting. But his life changes when he unwittingly gets Sylvia dismissed from her job and places her in danger.

After securing her new employment in a library housing the world’s greatest collection of books about magic, Gabe and Sylvia’s lives become intwined as they work together to find both the painting and the truth about Sylvia’s past before powerful people can stop them.

But sometimes the past is better left buried…

Lovely stories!

All of CJ Archer’s books are amazing and Marian Hussey has the best voice I’m in love with her 😍 I didn’t realize this was the sequel to glass and Steele so when I read this series which is only two books and then had to go back and read the glass and steele series, then I forgot the connections between the characters so now I’m reading it again and it’s all coming clear to me so it’s nice to rediscover it again

It Was Ok

I felt like it was more appropriate for a teen reader.

Absolutely charming. I couldn’t put it down!

I had very much been looking forward to this spin off series of books after finishing all of the “Glass novels”. I can safely say I was not disappointed. I almost wish I had waited to read it until after the second book comes out but I just couldn’t wait, and once I began listening I couldn’t stop. I finished the entire thing in one day!

My only complaint would be there were a few times the audio messed up. Probably four or five times. The most glaring example was when at one point some of the dialogue (really only a line) switched to a male speaking. It was early in the book so I was caught of guard and thought maybe there would be a man narrating the male characters but then it promptly went back to normal. It was as if some line didn’t record properly or something and they had to re-record that one part but the narrator was unavailable so they just got some random guy to do it. It was very strange and I’m glad throughout the rest of the book it was the normal narrator. The only other flubs were simple, like the sound was to quite for a couple of words or a word was repeated (as if they did a second take and forgot to take out the first.) Aside from the one jarring part where the narrator suddenly changed the mistakes were hardly noticeable and don’t take away from the rest of the book. In other words, it’s absolutely still worth purchasing.

I really like the new characters but was happy that Willie(y) is reprised in this one. I think in part because I really love how the narrator does her voice. It was really nice to have updates on all of the characters I have come to love (from the Glass and Steele novels). At the same time I am enjoying getting to know these interesting and dynamic new people.

I think the set up for more books in this series is excellent. While one mystery was solved, giving this book a pleasant end, the other mysteries brought up in the story that were left undiscovered have left me longing for more. I suppose I should be happy I only have to wait six months until the next installment comes out but it’s so hard waiting; now that I have just begun to get invested in these new characters lives. I highly recommend! If you are a fan of C.J Archers “After the Rift” series or especially if you love the “Glass and Steele” books then you will adore this new series. It’s a can’t miss book in my opinion. I loved it!
