Man of Cambridgeshire ,

A wonderful, classic production.

I first listened to this BBC dramatization as a child, and have listened again several times since (usually on road trips). For anyone who is confused: this is a radio play adaptation. No, it is NOT an audio book, and the text is abridged and modified. Yes, it was recorded in the 1980s, and it may seem silly to some. But I enjoy it immensely. If you like the books and are looking for a new way to enjoy Tolkien’s works, give this a shot!

Pretty unbearable

I mean, I do really like these Tolkien radio dramas, they’re wonderful adaptations, but Return of the King being stuck with depicting the final stage of Frodo’s journey with nothing but voice acting gets freaking oppressive. Ian Holm spends most of the radio drama sputtering or panting or wailing and eventually I just started fast forwarding. I appreciate the fact that as Friday becomes more corrupted, he sounds more like Gollum, but the actor who voices Gollum is also pretty insufferable, and really goes to show how perfect Andy Serkis’s performance in the Peter Jackson films was.
