Publisher Description

It's just townspeople picking numbers for the annual lottery...why, then, is there an ominous feeling to "The Lottery"?

Find out just what this lottery is for, and listen to seven other unique stories. The collection reveals Jackson's remarkable range, from hilarious to horrifying, dealing with modern issues of alienation, empowerment, racism, and economic class.

The stories are "The Lottery", "Flower Garden", "Come Dance with Me in Ireland", "Men with Their Big Shoes", "Trial by Combat", "Pillar of Salt", "Like Mother Used to Make", and "Colloquy".

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

I happed to see this in a short film back in Miss Guho's art class in 1975,Wow ! It just sneaks up on you with innocence and the excitement of The Lottery has everyone in the town buzzing and planning! But for what? Then slowly a stark realism of the Lottery develops, with a candid lucidity that weaves into the story so as to have your fear factor combined with,a child, the mother and the group of people that encourage the child in the event! Then it strikes, deep in the senses with ancient tradition and ceremony! It will shock you! Very Heavy and thought provoking! I have chills just thinking about it! Very well done!-Doug T-
