The Mysterious Island
The download is missing Part 2, Chapter 17
Awful voices, content, and missing a whole chapter
I have listened to this entire audiobook. It is indeed missing part two chapter 17. That is one of my main reasons for reading this so low. No one would sell a paper copy book with an entire chapter missing, and I don’t think an audiobook should be sold in that condition either. The chapter that is missing is a critical one to the backstory of one of the characters. My second reason for rating this low is this is narrated in voices that resemble a Howdy Doody puppet show, which makes it very hard to take the narrative seriously. The third reason is that the book itself is mostly very, very dull, and it seems that Verne was literally paraphrasing encyclopedia entries and filling most of the novel with monographs on natural flora and fauna. To put it bluntly, this wasn’t actually a novel so much as simply data entry. Verne has written many very engaging novels, but this is not one of them. In fact, it’s so bad, I really wonder if Verne actually wrote it himself.
