The last novel Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the most enduring works of American fiction. It is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal: a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.
Using the simple, powerful language of a fable, Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of defeat and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novel confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Settle in for a captivating literary classic narrated by an iconic voice. Actor Donald Sutherland guides us through Ernest Hemingway’s Pulitzer Prize–winning tale about an aging Cuban fisherman named Santiago confronting his mortality in a small boat floating in the Gulf Stream. Desperate to prove he’s still got the fisherman’s mojo he had in his prime, Santiago strikes out alone and does battle with a giant marlin. Along the way, he’s plagued by all sorts of other challenges, both internal and external. The desolate atmosphere of this solitary adventure is incredibly evocative, and Sutherland’s gentle gravitas is such a perfect fit for the story that we could practically smell the crisp sea air. He even adds a touch of Cuban inflection to Hemingway’s terse dialogue without overdoing it, totally locking us in to the time and place. There are many layers to Santiago’s story—and once this audiobook reels you in, you’ll want to keep unpacking them.
