A finalist for the Barry Award for Best Thriller
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.
Thirty-five years ago, as a young hotshot in army intelligence, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase reacted according to his own ideas of right and wrong, triggering consequences he could never have anticipated. And someone still wants him dead because of them. Just as he had begun to think himself finally safe, Chase must reawaken his survival instincts to contend with the history he has spent his adult life trying to escape.
Armed mercenaries, spectacularly crashed cars, a precarious love interest, and an unforgettable chase scene through the snow—this is lethal plotting from one of the best in crime fiction.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This speedy thriller delivers a load of international intrigue and a splash of tenderness. Former military intelligence agent Dan Chase has been lying low for decades, ever since he was dispatched to Libya carrying cash for a rebel army which he opted to keep for himself. But Dan’s quiet life in Vermont is upended when his old adversaries finally track him down. Author Thomas Perry crafts a flawed, reflective, and ultimately well-meaning main character in the wizened Dan. With his husky voice and hardboiled style, narrator Peter Berkrot takes us along as the grizzled antihero thinks on his feet, trying to shake off his enemies. The Old Man is a bona fide action thriller that has hints of John le Carré’s intrigue and Raymond Chandler’s emotional depth.

Entertaining
The Old Man is entertaining and a real treat. I was inspired to read it with the release of the FX series released in 2022. They are very different stories connected by only a few threads. While, in my opinion, the show is a better story, the book is worth the read, especially due to the differing story lines. I strongly recommend BOTH!
