An accident leads to the discovery of a mysterious machine that has rested hidden deep underground for countless millennia. The machine awakens to begin issuing a series of increasingly alarming, if minor, omens. The omens turn out to be astonishingly accurate, and ever more ominous. As Zedd tries to figure out how to destroy the sinister device, the machine issues a cataclysmic omen involving Richard and Kahlan, foretelling an impending event beyond anyone’s ability to stop. As catastrophe approaches, the machine then reveals that it is within its power to withdraw the omen... In exchange for an impossible demand.

Conflicted but Good
First off, I really like and enjoy these stories, including this one. The Omen Machine was not quite as engaging for me as some of the other books but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Despite this, some characteristics of this author's writing bother me immensely. Situations are drawn out, I feel like he uses twice the amount of words to describe something that could be described with similar detail without so many words. Furthermore, these books tend to feel self-righteous and I personally am not always in sync with his moral perspective and often notice hypocrisy in some of the viewpoints expressed. This frustrates me most of all and furthermore causes me to not particularly like some of the main characters in these books (even Kahlan). That said I absolutely love other characters. Despite my frequent frustration with the perspectives presented in these books I seriously enjoy them. I think that reveals how good the parts that I actually like are. I simply wouldn't read most books with perspectives that annoy me this much but I remain happy to read these because the parts are good such that I am still engaged in the story. This book, and all of the others in the SoT series are certainly worth reading.
What a great series. This was a great book
Wonderful to hear from Richard and Kahlan again!
I thought the series was over but I am so excited that it is not! I love the world Terry has created and I was so sad when I thought it was over. But based on the ending, I don't think this will be the last book about Richard and Kahlan!
