The Perfect Son

I actually read this and didn’t listen. Nothing profound to say here.
McFadden’s books always carry some ridiculous elements. This was no exception but I liked this more than some of her other, more intense novels. Considering she offers free kindle editions, putting up with editing and quality issues are worth it as she does provide some very creative twists and fast pacing. With the thriller/mystery genre I primarily go for fast pacing and great twists. The actual characters can be unlikable and clueless (of course I prefer otherwise). The plot can be somewhat shallow etc. So, my standards are lowered quite a bit for these reads as I mostly care for the thrills. I pick up this genre to zone out for entertainment’s sake. I will admit I am extremely good at predicting twists and solving mysteries so that is the best part for me. If I don’t have most of it figured out by the end, that earns the highest marks for me. Though McFadden doesn’t always have great twists and many are predictable this is certainly not always the case. The best part with this author is knowing there will be more than one turn on a twisted road around the halfway point. Oh, and an unreliable narrator always adds a challenge. Now, Perfect Son isn’t the best book of hers for these aspects but her characterization was better, not so overdone, it was fast paced, and it felt more believable overall . Lighter on the twists though. So, ironically, what made me like this book more than some of her others was strangely the opposite of my usual criteria. My guess is that I went in expecting her status quo and got something different. It proved to me she was able to write something a little different and still keep my interest. I’m not providing much detail because there is enough given in the synopsis. I liked the idea of a possible psychopath for a son and how a Mother would deal with the challenges that came with this.

Frieda does it again!

I was afraid this book by Frieda wouldn’t hit has hard as the others because I know this is one of her earlier books. While this one didn’t have as many twists, I still very much enjoyed it!!

Great listen.

The author did a great job with keeping you in suspense. I honestly didn’t see the ending coming from a mile away.
