Publisher Description

The classic novel of fly fishing and spirituality republished with a new Afterword by the author.

Since its publication in 1983, The River Why has become a classic. David James Duncan's sweeping novel is a coming-of-age comedy about love, nature, and the quest for self-discovery, written in a voice as distinct and powerful as any in American letters.

Gus Orviston is a young fly fisherman who leaves behind his comically schizoid family to find his own path. Taking refuge in a remote cabin, he sets out in pursuit of the Pacific Northwest's elusive steelhead. But what begins as a physical quarry becomes a spiritual one as his quest for self-knowledge batters him with unforeseeable experiences.

Profoundly reflective about our connection to nature and to one another, The River Why is also a comedic rollercoaster. Like Gus, the reader emerges utterly changed, stripped bare by the journey Duncan so expertly navigates.

Great book, not a great narrator

The book is very good. The narrator is trying to give each character a distinctive voice and starts overlapping characters as the book goes on. Is unnecessary and makes it difficult to listen to at times.

One of my favorites! Such a rich and lovely journey.

“The River Why" by David James Duncan is a captivating novel that takes readers on a unique and profound journey through the world of fly fishing. As an avid fly fisherman myself, I couldn't resist diving into this book, and I must say, it did not disappoint.

The story revolves around the life of Gus Orviston, a passionate young angler who embarks on a quest for self-discovery and meaning by immersing himself in the beauty of nature and the art of fly fishing. Duncan's writing style is poetic, and he masterfully captures the essence of the angler's soul, painting vivid pictures of serene rivers, elusive trout, and the mystical connection between angler and fish.

What sets "The River Why" apart from other fishing novels is the depth of its characters and the philosophical questions it explores. Gus is a complex and relatable protagonist, grappling with his own internal conflicts while seeking enlightenment on the riverbanks. Through his journey, we encounter a cast of fascinating characters, each with their own quirks and wisdom that contribute to Gus' growth.

Duncan's prose is rich with metaphors and introspection, and at times, it may feel like he ventures off on tangents unrelated to fishing. However, these tangents provide valuable insights into life, love, awareness, and the human condition, making the book more than just a fishing tale but, a spiritual guide book. The author skillfully weaves themes of family, relationships, indigenous culture, and environmentalism into the narrative, adding layers of depth and thoughtfulness.

One of the book's highlights is Duncan's ability to capture the magic and wonder of fly fishing. His descriptions of casting a line, reading the water, and feeling the pulsating energy of the river are nothing short of enchanting. Whether you're an experienced angler or someone curious about the sport, you'll find yourself captivated by the sheer beauty and serenity that Duncan brings to life.

There are moments when the pacing slows down, and like a smooth stream takes you gently down self reflection. This book is undoubtedly a literary gem, readers less sentient who seek a fast-paced plot or adrenaline-fueled fishing adventures might find themselves yearning for a quicker pace at times. I clearly didn’t.

Nevertheless, "The River Why" remains a remarkable book that resonates with fly fishermen and anyone who appreciates the wonders of nature. It's a story that reminds us of the power of introspection, the importance of finding our place in the world, and the profound lessons that can be learned from the rivers we cast our lines into.

In conclusion, I highly recommend "The River Why" to fellow fly fishermen and those who seek a thought-provoking and beautifully written novel. It's a book that will transport you to the banks of a river, immerse you in the joys and challenges of angling, and leave you pondering life's deeper mysteries long after you've turned the final page.
