The Self-Corrected Student: The Educator's Guide to Changing Your School's Culture; One Student at a Time (Unabridged‪)‬

My student, Dionte, was so angry with me. He did not want to stay in my class. I was standing in front of the door preventing him from leaving, so he literally tried climbing out of the window. As he opened the window and pushed, the screen fell out. Dionte simply turned around and sat on the window seal and said, "I’ve gone too far. I’m sorry Mr. Demby."

As the other students sat and watched in amazement, ready for me to start fussing, I just smiled. Because Dionte had shown me that my methods were working! He had come from being a desk throwing angry student to the young man I expected him to be. I was super excited. 

The self-corrected student is a student, who is so aware of themselves and their surrounding that they can clearly foresee difficulties. Manage their thoughts and behaviors in any situation. They are self-aware. They are socially aware. They are self-managed. They make right decisions. They even can tell when they have gone too far, and can take the necessary steps to correct it. Teachers can spend less time with behavior and more time teaching if they had self-corrected Students.

For this to affect your school culture, you, the teacher, will need to:

Take on a different mindset and believe that these methods will work
Start using these activities in your classroom
Develop a plan to teach and interact with self-corrected students
Prepare to relinquish some of your "teacher power."


When others see your class running smoothly, they will start asking, "What are you doing to have such a great class"? Once you show them these rituals and routines, it will catch on like wildfire! It only takes one self-corrected student to make a difference. You need to get this book!
