Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.
Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.
Excellent audio book of the Stephen King classic. Such a gripping and terrifying story. This book has always been one of my favorites of all time, and I love that it's now available as an audio book in iTunes.
Another reviewer gave this a negative rating, saying that they "changed the ending", but that person must have forgotten that Stephen King wrote this novel in 1977, long before Stanley Kubrick changed many aspects of the plot for his movie.
Overall, great product. Narrated well and clearly. It definitely takes you away, making you feel like you're right there, living the horrors of the Overlook Hotel!
King at his best
I so enjoyed listening to this audiobook. As usual, the book is so much better than the movie. I laugh at people who watch the movie, then read the book, and think that the book changed from the movie, and not the other way around. I've seen a couple of reviewers who rated the book low, because they think the book changed from the movie, but one must remember that the movie is an adaptation of the book and not the other way around. Anyway, this is certainly Stephen King at his best. I rank it right up there with Salem's Lot and It. The reader took a couple of chapters to get used to, but that is almost always the case with me. I get used to a certain reader from a different audiobook, then have to adjust, and this reader is actually very good and I think he brings out the characters of The Shining quite well. I also like that King doesn't authorize anything but unabridged audiobooks. If you like to listen to books while driving or cleaning or at bed time, I would recommend this book. It's definitely great to listen to on stormy days and/or nights. Happy listening!!! :-)
What a great story. So much better than Kubrick's movie. I was initially concerned about the narration, but was pleasantly surprised. The reader seemed the perfect choice by mid-story.
