Incredibly out of touch examples
This book was released in June 2019. It’s June 2022 now and there is a cost of living crisis, COVID is still raging, and his advice is pretty simple: “look on the bright side.”
You could say it’s poor timing, but we’re two years in to this pandemic, so let me give some examples from the book:
Dr. Chatterjee was frustrated when his work got bought out by a corporation, so his night shift patients no longer had access to care. His response? “I help so many other people, and I should be proud of that.”
Systemic problem created stress, and instead of, oh idk, fighting for his patients who could no longer seek care, he just let it go. I guess those Night Shift patients don’t matter anymore, because at least Dr. Chatterjee doesn’t have to think about it.
Second, he mentioned “if a nurse doesn’t think they’re making enough money, they should just be happy with the people they’re helping.” BIG OOF. COVID is literally killing nurses. As mentioned previously, there is a cost of living crisis. “Being grateful” won’t keep the lights on and your kids fed.
Lastly, he said something that I swear I had to rewind to hear again: “So and so author said he only made it through the holocaust because he was determined to write xyz book. I wonder how many more people would have survived if they had the same determination.”
Here’s a thought: if the book isn’t about World War II or family history, maybe don’t talk about the Holocaust. Blaming the victims of a tragedy for their own death is unacceptable.
The ONLY reason this is getting two stars is because of the other sections of this book. My suggestion might be to add a part about “should you face a systemic issue like your patients health being put at risk, your livelihood being at stake, or a fascist regime—you should face that stress head on and from the top, because it only gets worse otherwise.”
I really am only giving three examples, but there definitely more that I paused to think, “I’m sorry, this guy does hear himself when he talks, right?”
Please have someone whose not a rich person proofread your book next time. God that was painful.
