When seven murder victims are found in a small town, the homicide investigation shakes a small-town sheriff to her core in James Patterson's tense thriller.
Once a luxurious southern getaway on a rustic lake, then reduced to a dilapidated crash pad, the Summer House is now the grisly scene of a nighttime mass murder. Eyewitnesses point to four Army Rangers—known as the Night Ninjas—recently returned from Afghanistan.
To ensure that justice is done, the Army sends Major Jeremiah Cook, a veteran and former NYPD cop, to investigate. But the major and his elite team arrive in sweltering Georgia with no idea their grim jobs will be made exponentially more challenging by local law enforcement, who resists the Army's intrusion and stonewall them at every turn.
As Cook and his squad struggle to uncover the truth behind the condemning evidence, the pieces just won't fit—and forces are rallying to make certain damning secrets die alongside the victims in the murder house. With his own people in the cross-hairs, Cook takes a desperate gamble to find answers—even if it means returning to a hell of his own worst nightmares . . .
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In this thriller from James Patterson and Brendan DuBois, a chilling murder mystery quickly turns into a military espionage race against time. Major Jeremiah Cook is sent to rural Georgia, where seven people have been killed in a gruesome mass murder. The fingerprints and shell casings all point to four elite Army Rangers home from active duty, but nothing about the case adds up. Surveillance footage has been edited. Eyewitnesses are inconsistent. And the biggest question of all: Would four elite killers really be so easily caught? We got swept into the rush as Jeremiah’s unit worked against the clock, uncovering dark truths that could link the murders to a mysterious incident in war-torn Afghanistan. Narrator Ari Fliakos brings gravitas to the complex narrative with a steady voice that’s perfect for leading us through all the intense drama.

Great book!
The Summer House
Not his best by any means. Can not recommend this one. Constantly repeating info, extremely unbelievable plot… best I can give this book is three stars
So glad I stuck with it!
This book was not inside the genre that I typically read. Looking to expand my palate, I gave it a whirl and I’m so glad I did. The first chapter or two were a challenge to get through simply because the style and dialogue, not to mention the military settings were so vastly different than my typical who-done-it’s and cozy mysteries. Reading this book made me feel like I took a walk on the dark side, and I loved it! It was action packed, and offered lots of relatable characters that were just complicated enough. The pace of the book was spot on, I was not bored, not even for a second. Nice job!
