Scott Brick is a great narrator
He’s the perfect narrator for this book. As far as the book, sure, you can draw similarities to LOTR, but what I like about Brooks is he adds more detail to everything. I love being immersed in a fantasy world and when an author describes even the smallest things it only adds more to it
The Voices….UGH!
He tries to change up the voices but it’s annoying and inconsistent from one phrase to the next, and sometimes the accent changes in the middle of a sentence. Hendel is sometimes Russian, sometimes Irish, sometimes British. All the character voicings are all over the place. It makes it disruptive to listen to. It’s hard to keep the characters straight.
He also mispronounces a LOT of regular words.
Healed my Grief over LoTR
After going back through LoTR (read by the magical voice of Andy Serkis), I felt lost, even considering just going through it again. Then this series was suggested. I was skeptical of the small start to the story, suspicious of the narrator’s choice of accents. And then, without even noticing, I was utterly invested, with fondness for all of the party (and their unique voices), cheering on victories, surprised by wild turn of events, sometimes laughing, sometimes truly saddened. And that final scene! I smiled & was heartwarmed. This book is a gift. Thank you, Mr. Brooks.
