Publisher Description

The acclaimed national bestseller that is “old-school horror at its best” (Stephen King) follows a scout troop as it is unexpectedly caught up in an isolating and utterly terrifying fight for their lives.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

LORD OF THE FLIES MEETS ALIEN

This novel (audiobook) is disturbing and terrifying. It’s also very good. I like Nick Cutter’s work and the narration is great. There were a few times when I started getting sick to my stomach. I had read the novel years ago but wanted to listen to the audiobook. I highly recommend!

Three Major Issues

I wanted to like this book but it proved to be too challenging. There are three things that ruined it for me.

1. The narrator. Throughout much of the audiobook he reads too fast. Seems he barely takes a pause or breath between most sentences. I kept wishing the producers would’ve given him a dose of Ritalin.

2. The author, like many of Stephen Kings recent works, seems out of touch with language and phrases used by adolescents.

3. It seems Kings style is something the author attempted to duplicate. Not just bizarre turns of phrase that most people never use, but also unnecessary and drawn out descriptions. I find it annoying when a writer takes several minutes to explain something that could have been detailed within a few sentences. I get the need to setup scenes, but sometimes less is more. Leave something to the imagination.

All that said, I can’t recommend this. There’s not enough to the story to justify the pain involved in tolerating it to the end.

Not for me

Great writing and storytelling, but the extremely descriptive gore isn’t for me.
