Publisher Description
On any day our paths would never cross. Then I was forced to go to the Ruthless Disciples. Every month they do something called the hunt. I didn't plan to ever attend an event, but I needed the money. I thought it was nothing more than an adult version of hide-and-seek. I had no idea how wrong I was. Nor did I know I’d meet my worst nightmare that night: Andrew “Drew” Marshall, popular-as-hell football star and a Greek god among mere mortals. To anyone else, he would appear to be normal, a good guy. But that night I saw the cruel, dark monster hidden underneath. He was the epitome of evil, the leader of the Disciples, and I was his newest obsession. This is a dark enemies-to-lovers romance with many triggers. It is a complete standalone that contains a happily ever after.

The Wallflower is the first book in the Oakmount Elite series by JL Beck. This is the story of Maybel (Bel) Jacobs, a poor student at Oakmount University who was struggling to pay her tuition and raise money to pay medical bills for her mother, who was very sick. Bel confronted Drew Marshall when he was threatening another student with harm, and she garnered his interest. Her roommate/best friend entreated her to join in an event called “The Hunt” where college women ran through the woods in the dark and college men try to catch them. If a hunter was successful, the women’s participation was consent to anything their captors desired. Bel agreed to participate because if she was able to make it to a cabin in the woods, she would win $25K. However, Drew was determined to catch her. This book is the story of their meeting and the evolution of their relationship. It ended in a cliffhanger, to be continued in The Wildflower.
This is most definitely a dark romance. In the real world, nothing about the way Drew treats Bel is acceptable, but somehow I am able to suspend those sensibilities to read, and enjoy, the story. There is a large lists of trigger warnings that should be read before starting the book. Bel was the pure, kind, innocent one in this story, although her life was filled with hardships. Drew was a definite morally grey anti-hero. He was the product of a privileged, but traumatic, upbringing and it is easy to see how he became the angry bully that he was. There was a lot of push and pull in their relationship, and Drew was juggling difficulties at home and his obsession with Bel. I will admit to being frustrated with Bel in this book as she needed a stiffer spine. She was battling what her head wanted versus her desires. I enjoyed the story, but only recommend the book to readers who enjoy books that describe dysfunctional relationships. It is an open door book with a high spice level. I am interested in seeing where book 2 leads and hope for more growth in both main characters. I would like to thank Candi Kane PR and JL Beck for providing this ARC. I am leaving this honest review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are my own.
