Throughout this series of journals released to acknowledge 80 years since the beginning of WW2, we will be looking at the seven years of that conflict on an annual basis. As the clock struck midnight on December the 31st 1939, and the world welcomed in the New Year of 1940, people everywhere awaited the outcome of this second global conflict of the 20th Century, with bated breath. 1939 had been a turbulent year, and since war had been declared on Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany on September the 3rd, nobody could predict what the future might hold. Great Britain, under the leadership of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had worked tirelessly to appease Hitler and come to a peaceful compromise over his rebuilding of the German Empire, despite the fact that he was violating all the restraints of the Treaty of Versailles, placed on Germany after the First World War. Follow us onward into the history of WW2 in 1940.
