Publisher Description
Four-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts a glorious tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth.
All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.
In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.
N.K. Jemisin’s Great Cities Duology, which began with The City We Became and concludes with The World We Make, is a masterpiece of speculative fiction from one of the most important writers of her generation.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
If you haven’t listened to The City We Became, you’ll definitely want to do it before starting the second book of N. K. Jemisin’s amazing fantasy series. Six people who live in New York City (and right across the river in Jersey City) have just awakened to the realization that they’re the human avatars of one city-sized being. A Lovecraftian creature known as the Woman in White is amplifying all of the negative, polarizing aspects of urban humanity, attempting to disrupt the vibrant, flourishing diversity that unites the people of New York. Unfortunately, the other living cities of the world are slow to understand the cosmic threat this enemy poses. So what can New York’s six avatars do? Run for mayor! Narrator Robin Miles is a one-woman show, effortlessly mastering a variety of pitches, accents, and speech-flow patterns. Along with appropriate sound effects, she generates a New York City soundscape both realistic and magical. You won’t want to miss this ultimate battle for the soul of humanity, which suggests that even the tiniest friendly act can help the universe thrive.

Not my favorite NK Jamisin work
A good book but not what I would hope for from NK. It’s hard because she’s such an amazing author, but this book just seemed rushed and not as well developed. Also the audiobook sound effects were just really annoying. The narrator did an amazing job! Why ruin it with the sound effects?
Loved it!
A fun and worthy follow-up to The World We Became, I totally enjoyed both the story and Robin Miles’ reading.
