Publisher Description
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett faces two different kinds of raging beasts—one animal, one human—in this riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C. J. Box.
A rogue grizzly bear has gone on a rampage—killing, among others, the potential fiancé of Joe’s daughter.
At the same time, Dallas Cates, whom Joe helped lock up years ago, is released from prison with a special list tattooed on his skin. He wants revenge on the people who sent him away: the six people he blames for the deaths of his entire family and the loss of his reputation and property.
Using the grizzly attacks as cover, Cates sets out to methodically check off his list.
The problem is, both Nate Romanowski and Joe Pickett are on it.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This Joe Pickett mystery from thriller maestro C. J. Box is a one-more-chapter kind of listen. As a game warden in Wyoming’s untamed wilderness, Joe’s seen grizzly attacks before, but never one so violent, nor one that hit so close to his own family. What Joe doesn’t know yet is that a violent criminal has been released from prison, and he’s got a checklist of intended victims tattooed on his hand—ending with Joe and his falconer friend Nate Romanowski. As always, Box delivers a satisfying mystery filled with shocking twists and fascinating local color. (Like a pair of fringe conservationists who call themselves the Mama Bears.) Narrator David Chandler’s laconic voice captures both the rugged beauty of the Wyoming mountains and Joe’s profound love for his family and friends. This is a great place to start the Joe Pickett series—and best of all, you’ll have plenty of others to turn to after it’s over.

Spoiler Alert
I’m a Joe Pickett fan, but the premise of this book was too far-fetched for me. There’s so many easier ways to commit multiple murders than to create a mechanical bear. I get that they thought it would throw the authorities off the scent but they didn’t seem to consider basic forensic details like claw prints. Plus the logistics of backing a truck up to somebody’s front door so they can activate the mechanism when they open the door?? Who’s gonna open their door to someone who’s backed their truck up to the door. Sorry Mr. Box but couldn’t buy into it. Still look forward to the next one though. Hope it’s more believable. Still gave you three because I like you.
