Publisher Description

In his signature larger-than-life style, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall is a revealing self-portrait of his illustrious, controversial, and truly unique life.

The greatest immigrant success story of our time.

His story is unique, and uniquely entertaining, and he tells it brilliantly in these pages.

He was born in a year of famine, in a small Austrian town, the son of an austere police chief. He dreamed of moving to America to become a bodybuilding champion and a movie star.

By the age of twenty-one, he was living in Los Angeles and had been crowned Mr. Universe.

Within five years, he had learned English and become the greatest bodybuilder in the world.

Within ten years, he had earned his college degree and was a millionaire from his business enterprises in real estate, landscaping, and bodybuilding. He was also the winner of a Golden Globe Award for his debut as a dramatic actor in Stay Hungry.

Within twenty years, he was the world’s biggest movie star, the husband of Maria Shriver, and an emerging Republican leader who was part of the Kennedy family.

Thirty-six years after coming to America, the man once known by fellow bodybuilders as the Austrian Oak was elected governor of California, the seventh largest economy in the world.

He led the state through a budget crisis, natural disasters, and political turmoil, working across party lines for a better environment, election reforms, and bipartisan solutions.

With Maria Shriver, he raised four fantastic children. In the wake of a scandal he brought upon himself, he tried to keep his family together.

Until now, he has never told the full story of his life, in his own voice.

Here is Arnold, with total recall.

An Entertaining Read

While I highly doubt Arnold wrote every word of this himself (apparent in his ad lib of the first and last chapters), his charm and influence is nontheless felt. This is an entertaining look into the man we've all come to know from the media, well read by Stephen Lang. I read this book to get an inside look at his techniques for success and to better understand the behind-the-scenes events that shaped the things with which we're all familiar. Just go into it with reasonable expectations (as far as writing is concerned) and you should have a fun time.

Great Audio Book!

Most reviews that are negative are negative because of their judgments of Arnold and the things he did- not the book. C'mon, we're here for the book on Arnold, and whatever that includes. It's my opinion that the audiobook is well worth the money, for a pretty decent look into his life, career, and the things that drove him. Sure, he's not too appologetic, he's still working after all, and of course this is timed to help rebuild his image, but as someone who was interested in the man and his story, the audiobook is a good purchase. As with any autobiography, sometimes you have to read between the lines and see past what is presented, but this is both interesting and does cover a good number of his faults and mistakes in life in general. A great example of how anyone with a careful plan, consistency, and drive can overcome nearly any obstacle.

Also, I'd want to point out that the first 40+ minutes are read by Arnold himself, then out of nowhere Stephen Lang picks up. It can be misleading, because the "preview" is all Arnold reading, and the product details say Stephen Lang is the narrator. 48 minutes is pleny of Arnold, and I found it much easier to listen once Stephen took over. Whether you buy the abridged or unabridged version, Stephen Lang's voice (since you can't hear it in the preview) is easy to listen to. Not like Donny Deutch's audiobook where they got someone who sounds similar, Stephen Lang has a clear, no-accent American manly voice. Perfect for a 23 hour long audiobook.
