Publisher Description
Mattie Ross, a fourteen-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie -- as vital as she is innocent -- outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

A few things different from the movie
Overall, it was pretty good book, but there were a few things that were different from the movie as always
Always a classic
I have read and re-read this book so many times… it’s that good.
A treasure of a book
For fans of either the John Wayne or the Coen Brothers film, this book is absolutely essential. Both films lift different sources directly from the book and it is interesting to see what each keeps and what each leaves out. What the movies miss, though, is the direct viewpoint of the older Mattie Ross, who peppers the story with her political and religious views that she now has as an older woman. This makes the book feel more like you’re in a room with a woman recounting her story and going off on a tangent from time to time, often with a Bible verse and scripture at hand. As a result, the narration is perfect. It is as if Mattie Ross herself were speaking directly to you, partly to keep the memories of her old comrades Rooster Cogburn and LeBouef alive for anyone who will listen.
