"Narrator Kirt Groves provides an excellently distinct cast of voices."- Locus

A Man Called Ove
meets The Good Place in Under the Whispering Door, a delightful queer love story from TJ Klune, author of the New York Times and USA Today bestseller The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Welcome to Charon's Crossing.

The tea is hot, the scones are fresh, and the dead are just passing through.

When a reaper comes to collect Wallace from his own funeral, Wallace begins to suspect he might be dead.

And when Hugo, the owner of a peculiar tea shop, promises to help him cross over, Wallace decides he’s definitely dead.

But even in death he’s not ready to abandon the life he barely lived, so when Wallace is given one week to cross over, he sets about living a lifetime in seven days.

Hilarious, haunting, and kind, Under the Whispering Door is an uplifting story about a life spent at the office and a death spent building a home.

"Graves matches his narrative pace to the measured unwinding of the story's layers, focused but unhurried, in the same way that Hugo brews his therapeutic cups of tea." —AudioFile

4.5 stars!

4.5 stars!! I thought that this book was beautifully written, was an interesting concept, and I fell in love with almost all of the characters.

As for the main character, I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy the book, because the opening chapter really made me despise Wallace, the main character.

As someone who has loved immensely and lost a handful of people (2 grandfathers, 2 best friends, and endless acquaintances and friends from growing up) - I felt that I could relate to a lot of the characters and a lot of the heavy subject matter that was brought up.

While I don’t know what happens when we die, I really do want to believe that we’ll see our loved ones again one day…. And for that, I felt this book was equally a bit magical at some parts (because it makes me accept or not be as fearful of death perhaps?) and hopeful. Or as they discuss in the book…. It makes me have a little bit of faith that once our lives end - there’s more, and the best part of it all - that we’ll see our loved ones again one day.

I also think it’s important to discuss and share stories that have characters who identify and are LGBTQ. That being said, I loved that they didn’t go into any too graphic details of the love life between the main character & another. Romance books aren’t really my thing, no matter who the couple in the forefront happens to be. It’s why I couldn’t finish more than 100 pages of the first Twilight book, or the 50 shades of gray book… because I don’t like when the main character is so obsessed with someone else that they don’t really go any deeper than that. So I think the romance plot that was thrown in was tastefully done and the right amount.

I had never read anything by TJ Klune before, but I absolutely will be reading the rest.

Absolutely wonderful.

This story is so wonderfully written and exceptionally narrated. The character development and cadence throughout are fantastic, but, on top of all that, this book is so thoughtful, warm- hopeful even. I broke into laughter and tears multiple times while listening to this audiobook, feeling a little sheepish doing so, as it looked like I was a maniac & had to pull my hair up to show my earbuds so my partner wouldn’t think I was having a meltdown over laundry. If a book could break your heart and mend it, all while serving you a warm cup of joy and laughter, this is it.

A Fresh New Fantasy

Fantasy is my genre and so frequently you feel like your reading the same concepts in different wrappers. This author gives us a fantasy that is totally fresh in concept and his writing is so warm it’s like drinking a homey cup of tea. I fell in love with this book and can’t wait for Klune’s next contribution to the genre.
