Publisher Description

Norah Vincent’s bestselling book of investigative journalism, Self-Made Man, ended on a harrowing note. Suffering from severe depression after her eighteen months living disguised as a man, Vincent felt she was a danger to herself. On the advice of her psychologist, she committed herself to a mental institution.

Vincent’s new journey takes her from a big-city public hospital to a private facility in the Midwest and finally to an upscale retreat down south as she analyzes the impact of institutionalization on the unwell, the tyranny of drugs as treatment, and the dysfunctional dynamics between caregivers and patients.

I liked it :)

I thought it was a good book. I didn’t agree with every point made, but still enjoyed it. Hearing her optimism at the end breaks my heart given her eventual suicide in 2022. She was a very interesting person with a great mind i would’ve loved to hear more from. I hope one day someone will take the time to write a biography about her. Would love to read it :) RIP Norah <3

Surprisingly good!

Initially I thought this book would be somewhat pretentious but I had the hard copy since my mid 20s and part of clearing my bookshelves i decided to listen to the audiobook. I actually really enjoyed this book. I like that it presents 3 different mental-health-care modules, and I enjoyed the author’s own self assessment and personalizing the experiences. Journalism + autobiography.
