Lotusfall’s Performance chapter fourteen
My review: again, I don’t have any audiobooks, but I have this book, and I love it. It’s one of my top five favorite Super Editions! It will never beat number one for me (which is Crookedstar’s Promise) but it’s definitely close!
Now for the chapter:
When she awoke, the first thing Lotusfall saw was a gray muzzle pressed against hers. At first, it took a few moments for her brain to catch up with what had just happened. But when she realized that her neck was sore and wet and that she was bleeding from multiple places, Lotusfall sat upright in the nest she was in.
“Hey, be careful!” Slatewhisker scolded, her eyes burning when Lotusfall looked at her in surprise; the she-cat was curled up next to her, somehow both looking faintly annoyed and very concerned. Her meow softened as she added, “you need to rest.”
“What happened?” Lotusfall asked, settling back down again. She was grateful for Slatewhisker’s companionship and warmth, but guilt still gnawed at her heart at the lie she was keeping.
“I don’t know,” she replied, her voice clipping at the end. “Lilypaw woke up before the dawn patrol and found you in your nest, looking like you’d been attacked.”
Slatewhisker looked away. “If she had taken any longer, you might not have…”
The way she trailed away made Lotusfall shiver. It had been close. Too close. It was fortunate that her sister had checked on her. Lotusfall gently nuzzled Slatewhisker between the ears, pleased when the gray warrior didn’t move away. But how did Lilypaw know to check on her in the first place?
She was disrupted from these thoughts when Lilypaw returned to the medicine den, followed by a large succession of Lotusfall’s kin and friends.
“Lotusfall!” Riverlily cried, bounding over and reaching her daughter before the others got even halfway over to the next. “I heard what happened when I got back from patrol!”
Lotusfall’s heart lifted as Riverlily covered her face in licks; her mother’s whisker were wet, and she smelled faintly like fish, so she must have just gotten back from hunting. Behind her, Thunderclaw looked down at her with worry painted on his face. “We were so worried about you, but Lilypaw wouldn’t let us see you until now.”
“But Slatewhisker was allowed inside the den,” Lotusfall pointed out. Having refused to leave the nest, Slatewhisker was still curled up next to her. The gray she-cat snorted. “Like she could keep me away.”
Lotusfall felt her pelt grow hot and she stared at Slatewhisker, who had conveniently started looking in every direction but hers.
“But how did you get hurt in your sleep?” Thorntail wondered out loud. Whitepaw and Saltpaw both looked traumatized.
“Glad we’re not warriors yet,” Whitepaw shuddered. Saltpaw nodded wisely. “Yep, or else that’d be us.”
Lotusfall looked at them all sadly. So many cats were here that didn’t know the truth. None of them knew how bad of a cat she was. And now that she had finally seemed to have won over Slatewhisker’s affections, Lotusfall would have to break the news.
“It wouldn’t happen to you,” Lotusfall told Saltpaw. She paused. “It wouldn’t happen to any of you. It only happened to me… because I deserved it.”
“Don’t say that!” Riverlily and Slatewhisker said in unison. Slatewhisker looked embarrassed, so Riverlily was the one who went on. “Why would you deserve to be attacked so badly in your very own nest?”
This was it. The final moments of the love and warmth of her kin and friends before it all came crashing down around her. Lotusfall took a deep breath. “I… it’s because I… I’m a—“
“Ah, here she is, Willowstar.“
Those all too familiar words cut off Lotusfall’s confession and made her bare her teeth into a snarl; next to her, Slatewhisker looked between her and the voice’s owner in confusion.
Patchshade padded into the medicine cat den, followed by Willowstar and Curlsplash. “You see, it’s just like I told you. Look at her wounds.” He meowed, sounding not at all sorry that he was the one who caused them. “It’s clearly true, what I’ve told you.”
As soon as she saw the look of triumph on Patchshade’s face, Lotusfall knew exactly what he was going to say next.
“She’s a Dark Forest cat.”
