APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Journalist and activist George M. Johnson explores the joys and struggles of Black boyhood in this illuminating memoir. Through a series of heartfelt stories, Johnson tells us about their experience growing up in the small town of Plainsfield, New Jersey. At the centre of these tales is Nanny, their loving and opinionated grandmother and the family’s matriarch. Johnson’s stories are both hilarious and bittersweet, as they deal with topics like corporal punishment and gender roles. We loved how they started each chapter with a bit of wisdom from Nanny (which they call Nannyisms), like: “It aint’s harmony if all y’all singing the same note.” Johnson’s emotional narration let us feel like we were right there reliving these stories with them. We Are Not Broken is an eye-opening look at the Black experience—and a love letter to Black matriarchs.
