Whether you’re a diehard romantic or a hardened realist, What If It’s Us totally gets you. When Arthur and Ben meet by chance one magical summer in New York, it’s like something straight out of a rom-com. But despite all the sparks and butterflies, they can’t seem to get together for an actual date. As one planned meetup after another falls apart, we feel the same push and pull these relatable teenage characters do: Was their picture-perfect meeting fate or is their string of broken dates a sign that the universe doesn’t care? This sweet and hilarious story unfolds in alternating first-person perspectives. The wide-eyed Arthur’s chapters were written by Becky Albertalli and are narrated with major exuberance by Booksmart’s Noah Galvin—while the cynical Ben’s were written by Adam Silvera and are narrated with the perfect touch of dourness by audiobook newcomer Froy Gutierrez. Cowritten by two of the biggest voices in young-adult fiction, What If It’s Us is a perfectly imperfect romance that anyone can relate to.

Charming
At first, I was turned off when I discovered how naïve and youthful these protagonists are, as high school juniors pondering their first gay romance. But it’s also eye-opening. In my junior year, an event called the Stonewall Rebellion occupied the news and changed gay lives forever. Recognizing just how far we’ve come made this an entertaining excursion, and the two young actors who voice these roles do a terrific job. To be sure: this book is directed at a young adult audience, and there’s a level of naïveté from this female author (no sex) that simply borders on Wishful Thinking. But I was totally entertained.

I can tell you right now that this 📕 and even more so this 🎧 will ALWAYS hold a VERY special place in my heart. I’ve had it since its release date (as well as the sequel) and I can’t believe it’s taken me SO long to read/listen to it… 💞💞💞‼️
