Publisher Description

A masterful novel from one of the most admired writers of our time.

Christopher Banks, an English boy born in early-20th-century Shanghai, is orphaned at age nine when both his mother and father disappear under suspicious circumstances. He grows up to become a renowned detective, and more than 20 years later, returns to Shanghai to solve the mystery of the disappearances.

Within the layers of the narrative told in Christopher's precise, slightly detached voice are revealed what he can't, or wont, see: that the simplest desires—a child's for his parents, a man's for understanding—may give rise to the most complicated truths.

A feat of narrative skill and soaring imagination, When We Were Orphans is Kazuo Ishiguro at his brilliant best.

Highly recommend

I read Remains of the Day long before seeing the movie and the book won me to the work of Ishiguro. I was delighted to find When We Were Orphans as an audio book. Ishiguro is an expert wordsmith, a master craftsman of English language. I read once that Gustave Flaubert labored over his work sentence by sentence, seeking to perfect each line of a long novel. Ishiguro strikes me as that kind of writer. His choice of words and choice of phrase reminds me of the claim I once heard, possibly attributable to Somerset Maugham, that there are no synonyms in the English language. For the duration of this book, I actually began to look forward to a long daily commute to work just to get back to the book. If you ever thought of being an English major, you will love this book.
