Why we ger fat
This is not a diet book. Gary introduces the science behind why we get fat and what to do about it. He shows case after case where the American diet caused huge weight gains and the accompanying diseases when introduced into otherwise healthy societies. Gary points out that our diet for hundreds of thousands of years consisted of the fattest meat we could find along with wild fruits and vegetables. This is the opposite of what doctors and health officials tell us today based on faulty science and logic. The results are in and the low fat high carb diet is a huge failure.
Gary Taubes does a great job combining the facts and the logic that lead us to the scary conclusion that we've been taught the wrong thing all of our lives about how we should eat to be healthy. Also it is an easy read there are many scientific terms bit he does a good job explaining the processes our body takes when using the different types of foods. Bottom line... Carbs bad/fat good; the opposite of our training. He does a good job taking care of that cognitive dissonance created by this contradiction as well.
A repeat of Atkins
I am amazed how many good reviews this book received. If you ever read Atkins than you read this book. Eye opening and myth shattering this book is not. Unless you have never read Atkins than you may find some new information, but his theories have been around for more than 20 years. Th only exception in this book is he continually adds we need more testing. glycemic index needs more testing blah blah blah. Nothing new, basically eat meat, fats are ok stay away from sugar, white bread, white potatoes and anything that is high carb, many fruits and veggies are high in carbs, once again we need more testing to know which veggies and what carbs affect blood sugar, but green veggies are ok.
This is basically it. Don't waste your money unless you also need him to say over and over again we need more testing....
